what is this ?


The products carried in liquid or gases pipelines include a wide range of materials. Crude oil or gases systems gather production from onshore and offshore fields, while transmission lines transport crude or gases to terminals, interconnection points, and refineries. The fluids may be of domestic origin or imported. Refined petroleum product, including gasoline, aviation fuels, kerosene, diesel fuel, heating oil, and various fuel oils, are sizable portions of the pipelines business, whether produced in domestic refineries or imported to coastal terminals. Other materials include petrochemical feedstock (also known as secondary feedstock) such as benzene, styrene, propylene, and aromatics such as xylene, toluene, and cumene that are delivered by pipeline from refineries to petrochemical production plants or to other refineries. Also carried by pipeline are liquefied petroleum fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) (short distances), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and propane, all of which are gases at standard temperature and pressure. Still other materials transported by pipelines include carbon dioxide and anhydrous ammonia, both transported as liquids under their own pressure. In recent years, long-distance pipelines have been constructed to carry distillate fractions from the distillation of crude oils from refineries to production facilities for crude feedstock such as bitumen recovered from tar sands and heavy oils. Such feedstock are too viscous to be transported by pipeline. However, the distillate fractions are used to dilute these feedstock, with the resulting mixture being suitable for delivery back to the refinery by pipeline for further processing. Also in recent years, long-distance pipelines have been constructed to carry “produced water” from oil and gas fields to refineries and other industrial facilities that use copious amounts of water, but are located in areas or areas where water availability is limited.

WHO IS THE INSTRUCTOR ?

Hilman Ahmad & Associates is an independent consultant in mining, and oil & gas industry, who manage the Education Center for Professionals. The Director himself has been practicing production operation, safety, and corrosion control engineering in Indonesia for more than twenty-five years. He post-graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology (sponsored by UNESCO) in 1977. He joined in-field-practice program at Nippon Kokan Steel Company & Research Center Kawasaki, Japan, for production facility, design & construction, and corrosion prevention & control in 1983, and collaborated with Cormon Industrial Research Center, Brighton, UK, for integrity on-line corrosion monitoring development in 2000. He has been delivering consultative course in production operation, maintenance, safety, pipeline (onshore and offshore) and corrosion control for personnel from oil, gas, & mining company and petrochemical industry since 1979.
